Japanese: School Subjects in Japan

School subjects in Japanese elementary and junior high schools are largely similar to those in Hong Kong, but note that 「国語」(こくご) does not mean Mandarin Chinese—it means Japanese, their national language. In elementary school, math is called 「算数」(さんすう), focusing on everyday arithmetic like addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. In junior high it becomes 「数学」(すうがく), which emphasizes formulas and the process of arriving at answers—much harder than elementary 「算数」.
